Family: Mum Margaret, Dad Martin, three brothers - Mark, Alan (both older) and Tony (younger), one sister - Michelle (older).

Stephen had been modelling and acting since the age of 16, and made a brief appearance at the beginning of 'The Commitments'. He discovered his singing talents while doing karaoke at Butlins. When he heard about the auditions for the band through a friend, he was so desperate to find out when and where to go, he telephoned Irish newspaper 'The Star' and spoke to a journalist there who pointed Stephen in the right direction. Fortunately he made it eventually and performed the Lionel Richie tune "Hello", and 'Right Here Waiting ' by Richard Marx.
