Origins

William G. Morgan, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, invented volleyball in 1895. William was an instructor for the local YMCA and needing a game that was less physically demanding than other sports that was being played.

The game was originally called Mintonette but was later changed to match the appearance of the volleying of the ball across the net. The first game between two rival teams was played on July 7, 1896 at Springfield College.

Description

Volleyball is a sport in which two teams hit a ball across a net to and fro between each other over a tall net. Players on both sides try not to let the ball touch the ground or leave the court.

It is similar to tennis, but players use their hands and arms and the volleyball is the size of a basketball or soccer ball. The game is played on a rectangular court.
