Origins

During the 1930’s, rudimentary paintings were discovered in Russia that identifies a hunter on skis searching for reindeer. These paintings have been dated to 3000 years before the birth of Christ. Skiing emerged from the need of primitive society to search for food during the winter months.

Although still used as a basic means of transportation in colder climates, skiing is enjoyed as a competitive and recreational sport by most participants.

History

The sport of skiing has strong roots in Norway. Sondre Norheim (1825-1897) of Telemark, Norway is credited with creating the curved ski as well as inventing the telmark and christiania turn. His style of skiing was aggressive and included jumping over houses. Because of Norheim’s style and innovations, Telemark is often referred to as the birthplace of modern skiing.
