Description

Skating originally was invented as a necessity for a more efficient way of traveling by primitive society. The first ice skates were introduced over 5000 years ago. Since then, skating has evolved into numerous competition sports as well as a recreation sport enjoyed by all ages around the world.

Skates can fit into one of two categories: those skates that utilize a blade for mobility, and those skates that utilize a wheel for mobility. Blade skates consist of only skates that can be propelled upon the ice. Wheel skates consist of two main subcategories that include skateboarding and roller-skating. Although roller-blading utilizes a form of the term 'blade' in its name, it would be classified as a wheel skate because of its reliance upon wheels for propulsion.
