Reverse Genealogy is the process of tracking people forward in time, as opposed to what happens in conventional Genealogy which goes backwards in time. Reverse Genealogy is often used when one wants to discover living relatives of a particular family, especially a family which is not that of the researcher himself or herself.

Most genealogists have encountered (or will) what is called a "brick wall", meaning, a dead end point where no further information is available about a particular ancestor. In these cases, he or she will try to delineate from a particular time in the past (through the use of documentation) and trace the familiar lineage of that particular family till the direct descendants are found. If that happens, the genealogist will try and gather complementary information on the original ancestor researched, such as photos, family anecdotes, school and other educational information, etc.
