EFL is used to refer to the study of English while living in and being a native of another country which does not have English as the native language. These people are learning English as a foreign language with no immediate intention to live in an English speaking country. Conversely, ESL is sometimes used to refer to people who are living in, or intend to emigrate to, an English speaking country where they will be using English to function in their daily lives - though English is not their primary language.

ESL is the acronym for English as a Second Language, and it describes the language education used by people who are not native speakers of English or, who do not have English as their native language.
The terminology varies, and ESL is the term commonly used in the United States. In Canada it is also known as ESOL, the acronym for English for Speakers of Other Languages. In other parts of the world it is known as English as a Foreign Language or EFL.
