The Paine Range in Patagonia

In spite of bad weather, many walk the Paine range in the Patagonia territory, covering parts of both Chile and Argentina. Magnificent views have helped position the walk among the world's most popular.

Much of the area is very rugged and difficult, and the fierce storms that rage through the area don't make it much easier. A major highlight of the trip, though, is the Pain Grande, the highest mountain in the Pain massif. The black-capped mountain is surrounded by a floor of ice, with numerous islands in the area.
