Auckland Metropolitan is the grouping of the urban areas in and around Auckland City, including Manukau City and Pukekohe in the south, Waitakere City to the west, North Shore to the north and the urban settlements of the Hauraki Gulf which are actually part of Auckland City. Together, the Auckland Metropolitan makes up over one quarter of the New Zealand population.
It continues to grow in the northern and southern areas, although western growth is restricted by the Waitakere Ranges. In parts of Auckland Metropolitan, urban areas stretch the width of the North Island, with State Highway 1 representing the full width of the country at one point near Manukau.
