MIH, a media conglomerate that operates subscription television services in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, dominates South African media with the 'M-Net' subscription television service and successful 'M-Web' internet portal.
Under the leadership of Robert Mugabe, the media of Zimbabwe has been restricted and many media organizations claim they are unable to speak out against the government. In January 2004, The Zimbabwe Independent published a story claiming Robert Mugabe had flied on an Air Zimbawe plane during a trip, and four journalists and the group general manager were charged with criminal defamation. Other newspapers serving the country include the state-owned Zimbabwe Herald, which shows a strong support for the government and The Sunday Mail, which boasts on being controlled by the government.
The local Egyptian media extensively cover international issues, especially the situation in surrounding countries in the Middle East, most especially in Israel. English language media are reasonably limited and most media are based in Cairo.
