Description

Ferrets are domesticated pets that are members of the polecat family, or Mustelidae. Domesticated ferrets should not be confused with the black-footed ferret, which is an endangered, wild species.

Domesticated ferrets have a life span ranging from 5-10 years. Ferrets are very active pets, requiring up to three hours of play time per day. They are curious creatures, and are generally described as having an affection level between that of a cat and a dog. Ferrets make loving pets, but often, families with small children decide that the ferret's activity level and size are not the best match for that of a young child or toddler.

Typically, ferrets eat a dry pellet type food, either one intended specifically for ferrets, or a high-protein cat food.

Ferrets require regular vet care, including yearly vaccinations and health check-ups, as they are prone to certain types of cancers and diseases.
