Message Boards-Based

Players can roleplay in message boards (also known as forums). In most cases, the player will describe their character in their forum signature, or in a forum thread.

Message board roleplaying is text based, but unlike chat based roleplaying - it isn't live. Players leave forum posts describing what their character is doing - that post remains there for anybody to see at any time. Other players may want to have their character do something as a result of the previous post.

Message board roleplaying is normally conducted in the third person, with different locations and adventures divided into different forum threads.

Chat-Based

Some internet games are chat based, meaning that in order to participate, the player must be logged on to a chat service that other players are on as well. Click here for chat clients.
