What is cable television?

Cable television, or CATV, is a television distribution method in which signals from distant stations are received, amplified, and then transmitted by (coaxial or fiber) cable or microwave links to users.

Cable television originated in areas where good reception of direct broadcast TV was not possible, but CATV now also consists of cable distribution systems to large metropolitan areas in competition with direct broadcasting.

A cable system is a localized communications network that distributes television, Internet, and telephone services by means of coaxial cables and/or fiber optics.
