Description

Held annually in Park City, Utah, the Sundance Film Festival has become one of the world's premier film festivals, along with Cannes, Toronto and others. It began as the Utah/United States Film Festival in 1978, in Salt Lake City, as a way to attract tourists to the state. It was largely noncompetitive in the early years (except for one competition of American independent films). It moved to its current location in 1981.

In 1985, Robert Redford's Sundance Institute took over operations of the festival, and changed it into its current format. In 1991, it was officially renamed the Sundance Film Festival. It now has estimated audiences of up to 20,000 annually, with around 2,500 films submitted for the 2000 festival.
